Our bodies grew from movement. From our first steps as a species, to the civilizations we have built and destroyed, the human project has depended entirely on our ability to move ourselves and other objects through space.
How many of us have experienced something like this: We look up from what we’ve been doing, take a deep breath and/or a stretch of our neck or hips, and feel the effects immediately?
Our existence is a balance of physical, mental, and spiritual experiences, and a healthy (wellthy!) lifestyle benefits from a little bit of all of them. But we’ve done this clever trick to ourselves where we turned physical experiences, mental experiences, and spiritual experiences into separate products and services that other people do for us, added a labor value to them, assigned them a use value, and agreed on a price. It’s no surprise, really – we even put barcodes on fresh air and clean water.
But remember: movement is free.
Whatever our capacity for movement, we can shrug off the price tag every time we reach up or lay down and stretch out our full length, every time we shake our booty, take a stroll, or roll our shoulders. Every time we focus on our breath and slow down our racing thoughts, or learn a new skill or scrap of information, we can reject a system that makes everything about money including wealth itself.
